Kinetics of liquid metal infiltration in TiC-SiC or SiC porous compacts

TiSi2/SiC composites are promising materials for high temperature applications. The synthesis of these by metal infiltration is an interesting method that not still mastered. This study aims at identifying the thermodynamic and kinetic processes involved during capillary liquid silicon or Si-Ti molten alloys in porous compacts. Three cases were examined to produce dense materials: 1) TiSi2 pure SiC compacts 1550 °C, 2) reactive eutectic Ti0.16Si0.84 alloy + TiC 1380 3) 1450 °C. effect a excess was considered each case. kinetics filling percentage measured from monitoring weight gain increase. decisive role played thermodynamics on progress confirmed. It induces dissolution diffusion Ti atoms which results presence free infiltrated areas. Excess content found favorable infiltration. original based calculations measurements temperatures provides complete understanding improvements processes.
